Preeclampsia is one of the most common of dangerous pregnancy complications and may affect either a mother or a baby. It occurs when hypertension (high blood pressure) arises in pregnancy due to significant amounts of protein in the urine. While it progresses differently among patients, most cases are diagnosed preterm, but may occur up to six weeks postpartum. Apart from Caesarean section or induction of labor (delivery of the placenta), there is no known cure.

Eclampsia occurs in about one out of every 2,000 to 3,000 pregnancies and is characterized by seizures (convulsions) in a pregnant woman that are not related to a pre-existing brain condition. It follows preeclampsia, but it is difficult to tell when it will progress from preeclampsia. HELLP syndrome is characterized by symptoms that occur in pregnant women who have hemolysis (the breakdown of red blood cells), elevated liver enzymes, or low platelet counts. Its main treatment is to deliver the baby as soon as possible, even if the baby is premature.
